‘American Pie’ at the World Expo
With me corn beef n’ cabbage blood, the Ireland pavilion was top on my list. This pavilion was one of my favorites until Dominic and I discovered disturbing information. We spoke to one of the workers there who was born in China, but lived in Ireland for a few years.
Dominic asked this gentleman what he generally thought about the US. He told us that he used the American Pie movies as a reference. If you are unfamiliar with this movie series, all you have to know is that sex, booze, and idiocy are the main themes.
We laughed after hearing this and tried to explain that it really isn’t all like that, but it really is no laughing matter. I would hope that this is not the universal feeling for the US, but I have an itch that it may be.
Makes me want to run out and rent the movies!! That’s just too funny. Did you enjoy the corned beef n’ cabbage??
Great post, Sarah! I’m glad you and your fellow BSU students are there in China as a much better example of what real Americans are like. Hope you’re having a great time and I can’t wait to hear more stories when you’re back.
Wow, I watched that movie the other day and thought it was RIDICULOUS but hilarious at the same time! Glad to see you are having fun and treated like celebrities with all the pictures people want of you! Keep posting! (:
This is hilarious although it’s still better than Jersey Shore in my opinion. Sending love from Funcie!
Out of the popular available options, I think that movie’s a solid representation of Americans. It’s a little dated though. I’d prefer they milk that movie over the alternatives creatively ‘documenting’ teen angst … Glee … The Hills … The O.C. … My So Called Life … etc …
Would you be happier with The Breakfast Club?
Thanks for the post. I met plenty of Europeans who had a “wild west” view of America. They figure we all walk around with guns and have shoot-outs in the streets. Media representations are all they have. We do the same thing. What do Americans think about China?
HAHHAHAHAHHAHA I literally LOLed at this post. Except you’re right, it’s not a good thing. I’m glad you’re there to represent our entire country in a positive way. Keep doin’ what you do, girrrrrrl.
This is an important observation, Sara. Before I came to the States, the images of the U.S. in my mind were predominantly those Hollywood-stereotyped. Media is playing a big role in re/shaping how people view the world and cultures.
